A Study on Care-givers in Home Service of Long-term Care in Providing Nutrition for Their Beneficiaries

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for the improvement of the quality of long-term care services by surveying of nutrition management and meal assistance services of long-term care for the beneficiaries in home. The social worker of the agency conducted

Method : This study was conducted by the social worker through one-on-one visit survey of 424 long-term care givers who had more than a year of experience in providing Home-visit care at long-term care institutions nationwide from June 1, 2018 to July 31, using a structured questionnaire.

Result : The result showed that the most of meal assistance service of care givers took 60 minutes and they cooked by themselves(57.4%) for the beneficiaries of long-term care services. Most of the care givers cooked without any recipes(68.6%) and even care givers with the recipes normally provided foods that were easy to digest such as soup, taking into account the nutrition of the beneficiaries. To maintain the health of the beneficiaries or to prevent the disease from deteriorating, care givers provided meals considering 'foods that are loved by adults' (19.8%), dental conditions(18.7%), and consideration of diseases(18.4%). Meanwhile, care givers obtain nutrition information through dialogue of their colleagues (19.2%) or job training (15.2%) at the monthly meeting of long-term care institutions. They acquired most of the informations about nutrition on TV (40.6%), on the Internet (15.2%) and books(3.7%).

Conclusion : In order to provide suitable meal assistance services for the health of long-term care beneficiaries, it is necessary to provide a recipe or manual for the care givers and a customized nutrition support system should also be provided through continuous monitoring of services and individual case management of social worker for the elderly.
